Overcoming weight loss plateaus

Nearly everyone hits a plateau. It usually means your body is adapting, not that treatment has stopped working.

Why plateaus happen

As you lose weight, your body needs less energy and appetite signals can rebound. Water shifts can also hide fat loss on the scale for a week or two.

Reviewing your dose

If you have been at the same dose for a while and are tolerating it well, your provider may consider a step up. If side effects are limiting how well you eat, the right move may be the opposite.

Body composition strategies

  • Prioritize protein at every meal to protect muscle
  • Add resistance exercise two to three times per week
  • Track measurements and how clothes fit, not only the scale
  • Review sleep, stress and alcohol, which all affect appetite

Common questions

How much weight can I expect to lose?+

Results vary. In clinical trials, average weight loss was about 15% with semaglutide 2.4 mg over 68 weeks and about 20% with high-dose tirzepatide over 72 weeks. We don't promise specific results.

How quickly will I see results?+

Many people notice appetite changes within the first weeks. Weight loss usually builds gradually as doses are increased.

Why has my weight loss stalled?+

Plateaus are normal as your body adapts. Your provider may review your dose, protein intake, activity and sleep. See our plateau pathway.

Do I need to exercise?+

Exercise isn't required to start, but regular activity — especially strength training — improves results and helps protect muscle.
