Managing GLP-1 side effects

Most side effects of semaglutide and tirzepatide are digestive, mild to moderate and strongest during dose increases. Small changes make a big difference.

Hydration first

GLP-1 medications reduce thirst along with appetite, and dehydration can worsen nausea, headaches and constipation. Sip water steadily through the day rather than all at once.

Preventing nausea

  • Eat smaller meals and stop at the first sign of fullness
  • Limit greasy, fried and very sweet foods, especially after a dose increase
  • Avoid lying down right after eating
  • Bland foods such as crackers, rice or toast can help on harder days

Dietary pacing

Because food leaves the stomach more slowly, eating fast or eating past fullness is the most common trigger for discomfort. Put the fork down between bites and give yourself 20 minutes per meal.

Dose adjustments

If side effects are persistent, your provider may hold you at your current dose longer or step back down. There is no prize for titrating quickly. Contact the clinic promptly for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration.

Common questions

What are the most common side effects of GLP-1 medications?+

Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, reflux and reduced appetite are most common, usually during dose increases.

How can I reduce nausea?+

Eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first sign of fullness, limit greasy foods and stay hydrated. Your provider can also slow your dose increases.

When should I contact the clinic about side effects?+

Call promptly for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration or any symptom that worries you. For emergencies, call 911.

Will I lose muscle on GLP-1 medications?+

Some lean mass loss happens with any significant weight loss. Eating enough protein and adding resistance exercise helps protect muscle.

Alcohol adds calories, can worsen nausea and affects blood sugar. Discuss your situation with your provider.
