Getting started
How do I get started at Reduce Medical Weight Control?+
Call (805) 644-3444 or send an inquiry through our contact page. We'll explain how the initial evaluation works and what to bring.
Is the program physician-supervised?+
Yes. Reduce was founded in 2014 on physician-supervised weight loss. Prescription treatment is provided only when a licensed provider determines it is appropriate for you.
Do I need a referral?+
Call the clinic and we'll let you know what's needed for your situation.
What happens at the first visit?+
We review your health history and medications, take measurements and talk through your goals and which options are appropriate. See our first-visit guide for what to bring.
Do I have to buy special food or meal replacements?+
No. We never require prepackaged meals. We help you build meals from regular groceries.
Is the clinic judgmental about weight?+
No. Non-judgmental care has been part of our approach since day one. Everyone starts somewhere.
GLP-1 medications
What is semaglutide?+
Semaglutide is a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist that slows digestion, increases fullness and helps regulate appetite and blood sugar.
What is tirzepatide?+
Tirzepatide is a once-weekly medication that activates both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. In clinical trials it produced greater average weight loss than semaglutide.
Which is better, semaglutide or tirzepatide?+
It depends on your health history, tolerance and goals. Tirzepatide showed larger average weight loss in the SURMOUNT-5 trial, but semaglutide is also highly effective. Your provider will help you choose.
How often are GLP-1 injections given?+
Both semaglutide and tirzepatide are given once a week, ideally on the same day each week.
Why do doses start low?+
Starting low and increasing gradually, typically about every four weeks, helps your body adjust and reduces digestive side effects.
Can I switch from semaglutide to tirzepatide?+
Sometimes. Your provider can review your progress and side effects and discuss whether a switch makes sense.
Who should not take GLP-1 medications?+
They are not appropriate for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, and require caution with a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease or pregnancy plans. Your evaluation screens for these.
Side effects & safety
What are the most common side effects of GLP-1 medications?+
Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, reflux and reduced appetite are most common, usually during dose increases.
How can I reduce nausea?+
Eat smaller meals slowly, stop at the first sign of fullness, limit greasy foods and stay hydrated. Your provider can also slow your dose increases.
When should I contact the clinic about side effects?+
Call promptly for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration or any symptom that worries you. For emergencies, call 911.
Will I lose muscle on GLP-1 medications?+
Some lean mass loss happens with any significant weight loss. Eating enough protein and adding resistance exercise helps protect muscle.
Can I drink alcohol while on treatment?+
Alcohol adds calories, can worsen nausea and affects blood sugar. Discuss your situation with your provider.
Super Diet Shot
What is in the Super Diet Shot?+
Vitamin B12 combined with the lipotropic nutrients methionine, inositol and choline (MIC).
Does the Super Diet Shot cause weight loss by itself?+
No. It is a nutritional add-on that supports energy metabolism and liver fat processing. It works best as part of an overall plan.
How often can I get the Super Diet Shot?+
Your provider will recommend a frequency. Established patients can walk in during injection hours.
Can I get the shot during walk-in hours?+
Yes. Walk-in injection hours are Tuesday 9 AM–1 PM, Wednesday 2–6 PM and Thursday 9 AM–1 PM.
Results & expectations
How much weight can I expect to lose?+
Results vary. In clinical trials, average weight loss was about 15% with semaglutide 2.4 mg over 68 weeks and about 20% with high-dose tirzepatide over 72 weeks. We don't promise specific results.
How quickly will I see results?+
Many people notice appetite changes within the first weeks. Weight loss usually builds gradually as doses are increased.
Why has my weight loss stalled?+
Plateaus are normal as your body adapts. Your provider may review your dose, protein intake, activity and sleep. See our plateau pathway.
Do I need to exercise?+
Exercise isn't required to start, but regular activity — especially strength training — improves results and helps protect muscle.
Maintenance & nutrition
Will I regain weight if I stop GLP-1 medication?+
Studies show many people regain weight after stopping abruptly. A gradual, monitored transition with nutrition support improves your chances of keeping it off.
Do I have to stay on medication forever?+
Not necessarily. Some patients taper off with a maintenance plan; others benefit from longer-term treatment. Your provider will discuss options.
What should I eat while on treatment?+
Prioritize protein, vegetables, fruit, whole grains and water. Our nutrition guides cover practical meal structure.
How much protein do I need?+
Needs vary by body size and activity. Many people aim for a palm-sized portion at each meal; your provider can personalize a target.

Emerging medications
What is retatrutide?+
Retatrutide is an investigational once-weekly injection that targets three receptors (GLP-1, GIP and glucagon). It is in Phase 3 trials and is not FDA-approved.
Does Reduce offer retatrutide?+
No. Retatrutide is not FDA-approved or available. If it is approved, we will evaluate offering it where clinically appropriate.
Should I wait for retatrutide instead of starting now?+
Approval timing is uncertain. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are well-studied and available today, and progress you make now carries forward.
Is it safe to buy retatrutide online?+
Retatrutide is not an approved drug, so products sold online are not regulated as approved medications. We advise against using them.
